About Traffic Escape

Traffic Escape is a jammed grid of cars, each parked at the front of a long pastel road, and you clear it by driving the cars off one at a time. A car can go only when the lane in front of its bonnet is empty all the way to the edge; the road it trails, however it winds, never gets in its own way.

The rule is Arrow Escape's, but the boards are different and the direction is shown by the way each car faces rather than by an arrowhead, so on a busy level you read the noses of the cars. There are 100 levels, from 45 cars on a 15 × 20 grid to 238 on 44 × 58. Everything runs in your browser at no cost and with no download.

Level 11: the only level where a single car can move at the start, bottom left and facing left. Once it is gone, four more can go.
Traffic Escape level 50: 39×53 board with 189 cars
Level 50: 189 cars. After the first four waves, 173 are left and just one can move, the car at column 23, row 51.

Level 100: 238 cars on a 44 × 58 grid with a 15:55 clock.

How Traffic Escape works

Tap a car and it drives off in the direction it faces, pulling its road behind it, but only if every square straight ahead of it, up to the edge of the grid, is empty. Turns in its road do not matter, and neither do cars parked beside the road. Tap a car whose lane is not clear and it stays where it is, and you lose one of four hearts.

A second tap on the same stuck car costs nothing until another car has driven off. The clock starts on level 2, at four seconds per car with a two-minute floor; level 2's 59 cars give exactly 4:00. Out of hearts or out of time, you choose between a revive and a fresh start of the same grid.

Traffic Escape level 1 after 13 cars have left, with one car that can drive off marked in green and one blocked car marked in red
Level 1 after 13 cars have driven off. Car 1, at column 1, row 13, faces down and its lane to the bottom edge is empty, so it can go. Car 2, at column 8, row 13, also faces down, but its lane runs into the car outlined in red.

  • Level 1: 45 cars, no clock.
  • Level 2: Clock from here on: 4:00 for 59 cars.
  • Level 3: First square grid; levels divisible by 3 (not by 10) are square.
  • Level 10: First large grid, 35 × 49 with 164 cars; one comes every tenth level.
  • Level 11: The tightest start in the game: one movable car.

Traffic Escape strategy

  1. Only a car on the edge of the grid, facing out, can move on a full board. In level 11 that is a single car at column 1, row 32, and removing it lets four more go.
  2. A long road says nothing about when its car can leave. In level 17 the car at the end of the 47-cell road, at column 26, row 28, can drive off in the third wave.
  3. Spot the one car the whole jam waits on. In level 50, after four waves, 173 cars remain and only the one at column 23, row 51, facing right, can move.
  4. Level 80 takes 75 waves, the most in Traffic Escape, and gives 14:25 for 216 cars, which leaves about 11.5 seconds per wave.

Traffic Escape FAQ

Is Traffic Escape the same as Rush Hour?
No. In Rush Hour you slide cars back and forth along their lanes to free one car. Here every car leaves the grid for good, only forwards, and only when its lane is empty.
Are the grids the same as Arrow Escape's?
The sizes and the rule match, but the boards do not: level 1 has 45 cars where Arrow Escape's level 1 has 47 arrows, and the solutions for Arrow Escape do not apply.
Do the car colours or models matter?
No. They are decoration, and every car follows the same rule whatever it looks like.
